What is the feeling behind your song and how does it link to climate change?
This song, by James Bay, is a song in which the author laments fighting against the tide of time and life as is sweeps him away from a previously relationship. While this song isn’t specifically linked to climate change, the image of holding back the tide is very relevant to living in Reading. The last two decades have seen many instances in which areas of Reading flooded. With climate change bringing increasingly extreme rainfall and with market pressure of building new homes on flood plains, it feels like we are literally holding back the river in Reading. But Reading has prospered throughout history due to its relationship with the waterways that it is built on and we celebrate our relationship in it with events such as the annual WaterFest, so it’s not surprising that water features in a number of songs in our group’s repertoire.
What is your link to Reading?
We are an acapella group based in Reading, who rehearse and perform in Reading. While missing being able to rehearse and perform in person, we kept in touch during lockdown and took part in the Virtual Reading Fringe in August, streaming a video from our 4th anniversary gig in South Street in February this year.
